Little Routines, Gillian Stewart
Summer After Lockdown With Young Children
Gillian Stewart, Wednesday, July 08, 2020

Goodness me it has been a very challenging few months for everyone, particularly those of you who have had to cope with home schooling.

Children are unbelievably resilient and most will adjust to the changes and accept the new normal without any problems. It is important for parents to be aware of the guidelines and to make sure that, as a family, they feel safe. Little ones do not need to feel stressed or anxious about the social distancing and self-hygiene expectations.

Hand washing is still one of the best ways to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. If you use hand sanitisers, you should supervise your little ones and follow the proper child safely precautions.
Children over the age of 5 may be advised to wear a face covering in certain situations. There are a good selection of face masks on the market, so choose one that’s fun and colourful. You could make your own if you are feeling creative or add a motif to a bought one, to personalise it.
They do need washing after each use, so buying or making more than one will certainly save on the stress of continuous washing!

Life for little ones should be fun and carefree and it still can be. Children love being outdoors and they really don’t care what the weather is doing. They thrive in the fresh air and having the freedom to run around and explore.

Some of the traditional outdoor activities are still the best!
Picnics. Feeding the ducks. Playing pooh sticks. Wildlife spotting. Bike rides. Scooting. Ball games. Rolling down slopes and learning to do head over heels. Hide n’ seek. Skipping. Nursery rhymes, singing and storytelling on walks. Muddy walks and jumping in puddles.

Children will eat and sleep better, so make sure you try to spend as much time as possible outdoors!

Enjoy the slightly different summer holidays. Have fun with your little ones but remember, not too many late nights. Children still need the structure of a positive bedtime routine and a good nights sleep!
